How To Tame Your Brain and Reclaim Your Joy

Here’s a frustrating self-fulfilling prophecy: Feelings of self-doubt, stress, and negativity produce more of the same results that cause self-doubt, stress, and negativity. 😣 Yet knowing that doesn’t seem to help or can make it even worse as you realize, “I’m doing it again” causing more stress.


I’ve worked with many successful women (and talented women who could be) who still struggle with these issues. That’s because it can come from so many places: long-buried childhood messages or traumas, comparing yourself to peers or siblings, perfectionism, disrespectful job experiences, abusive adult relationships, and more. You may be under pressure as the person with all the answers at work while balancing family, and possibly health issues and/or aging parents. It also doesn’t help to know that you’re not alone.


Misery loves company but confiding in friends who feel the same way often perpetuates the cycle by “normalizing” it. People will say “yep, that’s just the way it is,” ...but it doesn’t have to be.

I used to meditate a lot to negate these kinds of feelings. Meditation is helpful and practiced regularly can have lasting results, and it’s very easy to become distracted, start daydreaming, or just fall asleep. Not to mention the constant interruptions of your life (Mommy Johnny just stuck something up his nose again!).


The hypnotic state by contrast creates “a powerful combination of dissociation, immersion, and openness to a new non-judgmental immersive experience,” says Dr. David Spiegel, a Stanford University psychiatrist and leading researcher of hypnosis. Brain-imaging studies show that during hypnosis, activity in a brain region that helps people switch between tasks quiets down. This is how the brain is retrained. This same region seems to disconnect from another area responsible for self-reflection and daydreaming—which is why hypnotized people aren’t worried about who they are or what they’re doing. It's like a spa day for your mind, and who doesn't love a good spa day?



Not quite ready for hypnosis? Try the following tactics:

  • Schedule weekly “dates” with yourself allowing for a few hours of me time to journal, go for a long walk, take a bubble bath, or get a massage. Tap into all the things you do love about your life and immerse yourself in gratitude – and just unplug! (that last part is key. Put your phone away!)

  • Brain dump: List all the things that are causing you stress. Now see if there is anything you can eliminate, delegate, say no to, forgive, or ask for help with. If your list is long just choose 3 things and determine a reasonable timeline for dealing with them. Rinse and repeat!

  • Mirror work: Somewhere in your life, you picked up harmful beliefs such as “I’m not smart enough, worthy enough, or capable.” If left untreated, these harmful beliefs integrate with your mind and become the main driver of your everyday behavior. It sounds and feels silly, but mirror work is literally the practice of looking into your own eyes and repeating affirmations. Like hypnosis, it’s a form of rewiring the brain.

  • Emotional Freedom Technique: Tapping on a combination of acupuncture points and repeating positive statements restores balance and energy flow.
